Consider the statements made by Liz's father in this chapter about not caring what other people think of you.

On pages 19-22 Daddy's strange pastime draws the attention of others. Is it always good advice to ignore the opinions of "others"? Is social opinion, or even shaming, an important part of culture? When should it be and when should it not be?

  1. I believe that in the book as daddy he has a good mental standpoint by not caring what others think, although for a higher up person this could be seen as an act of arrogance to a certain extent. I believe that one should always believe in the self and not care about negative social norms set by others but at a point you should care what others think because we are social beings and need eachother to survive.

  2. I think it's acceptable for the man to look through trash with his daughter. He's encouraging her to be humble, which is a valuable quality. He's also teaching her to not be ashamed of herself because of her wealth, and that's good because it's not something that she can control.

  3. I think in this situation it didn't really matter what other people had opinons towards Liz and her dad. If those rich people knew that all he was trying to do was give presents to his family then I think they would've have been more then happy that he's using there thrown out trash reusing it and making other people happy for it. People are always going to judge a book by its cover its something we naturally do and will always do. But if they just knew the background and what was going on in this family's life I'm sure there opinion would've been different.

  4. I think that you should be able to be a strong individual and be able to ignore other peoples opinions. It isn't always good advice to ignore other people's opinions, I believe. Sometimes from what people say to you, you can learn more and fix the way you live. This is always a bad thing because you shouldn't have to listen to others criticize you. You should be able to be comfortable in your own skin. Social opinions are important to some people, but not to others. When you're not in a good place, in life, people's opinions should matter to you so you can become better.

  5. no it is not always great to ignore others opinions, but always is a very important part of that phrase. ignoring people opinions in a situation like this is very justifiable, the job of a parent good or bad is to provide for your children and spouse. this is what liz's dad is doing, whether that is the right way to provide or not is something that you must decide based on your own morals compass. but liz's dad has a good reason to dig through the trash and not care about others opinions. social judging and shaming is an extremely important part of culture. It is a crucial part in shaping our personalities and culture, it shouldn't be important in the situation that liz is in right now, but it is important when someone just makes a stupid decision. like liz's parents being drug addicts, that is something that is acceptable to judge and something that is very important. -murray

  6. Shaming is an important part of our culture. If we didn't shame drugs, people who are thinking of doing them or are doing them would feel no guilt and realize what they're doing is horrible, but is only effective to those who feel shame, and if they don't they're a sociopath.

  7. I think that I doesn't matter what other people think of you do what you wnat as long your are not harming yourself or the people around you. You are entitled to your opinion but that doesn't mean that your opinion is right just be mindful of what you do around people as long as your not harming anyone

  8. I think that it shouldn't matter what others think of you, and the dad does a good job of expressing this to Lizzy. Because he needed money for drugs, he couldn't buy his daughters new things. I think that it this scene shows that he is caring because he is willing to pick through the trash to find his family some decent things that they can use and enjoy. This is something that shouldn't be looked down upon by others. I think that social opinions and shaming is something everyone does at some point in their lives, no matter what their economic class. I believe that it is something that is wrong, because not everyone cannot be as fortunate as some. We see this clearly during this scene. I think that social culture is not something to make fun of.
